Karylle Learns a Lot from Producing Her Own Album

Currently based in Singapore in preparation for the musical TV series The Kitchen Musical, Karylle put her Philippine commitments on hold to devote herself to her new project. The 30-year-old singer-actress will return to ABS-CBN come October. Before she left, Karylle was busy hosting Showtime and ASAP, as well as promoting her album, Roadtrip, which she produced herself and contains 11 original compositions.

Recently, Karylle received a Platinum award for her album A Time for Letting Go which was released in 2009. The Kitchen Musical star says it feels good to be a proponent of the local music industry. “Siyempre pangarap naman ng bawat singer yung magkaroon ng mga awards na ganyan especially since never pa ako nakatanggap. Yung first gold award ko was also for Time for letting Go and dahil ngayon nga dun sa bago kong album ako yung nag-produce nun and pinaglaban ko talaga yung original compositions because alam naman nating lahat yung state of OPM,” she said.

Karylle said that she has learned a lot from taking a risk and producing her own album just to push for more original songs in the industry. “I’ve been very vocal about how I want to do my own little thing. Parang do my part in fighting for original music kasi to tell you the truth, ayoko na ng remakes. So to come out with Roadtrip, it costs a lot of money and I spent a lot of time on it. I learned a lot, madami akong natapon na pera din, pero learning experience ang dami. Thank God din also for Twitter kasi ang daming nagpapayo, hindi lang sales report ang nakukuha ko pero yung good feedback from people. Actually nagugulat ako kasi maganda yung mga feedback on the music video by Quark Henares and on the song itself,” she shared.

In producing her own album, Karylle also got the support of her mom Zsa Zsa Padilla, and a lot of her other friends in the industry. Karylle said that her mom was also very happy when she found about her four-month stay in Singapore and is already planning a visit to Karylle with good friend Kris Aquino. “Of course she was very supportive kasi ever since naman talaga, gusto ko magkaroon ng musical, sinasabi ko nga parang sana nabuhay ako nung time nila Ms. Gloria Romero, yung noong Sampaguita-LVN days, kasi ‘di ba madaming mga musicals nun? Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Parang I belong in the wrong era,’ so eto na nga finally. Buti na lang, because of Glee nagkaroon ulit ng ganitong klaseng format. So si Mama nagplaplano sila ng bakasyon ni Tita Kris so I hope matuloy sila. Pero ang sweet nga eh sabi ko ay talaga i-book na natin. Basta kiniwento niya na nagplaplano sila ng bakasyon doon,” she said.
